What We Believe

What We Believe

At Chalmers Community Church, we believe and affirm the following:

Scripture

We believe the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, to be the only inspired, inerrant, infallible, authoritative Word of God written (II Timothy 3:16-17, II Peter 1:20-21, Matthew 5:18)

  • Inspired: Words of self-disclosure breathed by God to men who were moved by the Holy Spirit to write the original texts. (II Timothy 3:16-17, Matthew 4:4, II Peter 1:20-21, I Corinthians 2:12-13)
  • Inerrant: Every word contained in the original manuscripts is without error. It is true in its grammatical and historical setting. (Matthew 5:18, John 10:35, II Peter 3:15-16)
  • Infallible: Since Scripture is “God-breathed” it follows that it must be without error and infallible. Scripture is infallible in all that it teaches in the context of ordinary grammatical-historical exegesis of the text.
  • Authoritative: Since the Scripture is God-breathed in part and in whole, having come from God Himself, we can have confidence in Scriptures’ authority and capability in being our rule of faith and practice.

The Triune God

We believe in one God (Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Isaiah 44:6) eternally existent in three persons (Matthew 3:16): Father (Matthew 6:32), Son (John 1:1-14), and Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3-4).

  • The Father: We believe the Father to be the Creator and Sustainer of all things. He is the Supreme Personal Intelligence and Righteous Ruler of the Universe. He is life, therefore the only source of life (John 5:26, I Corinthians 8:6).
  • The Son, Jesus, The Christ, has made the Father known (John 1:18; 5:19). We believe in his virgin birth (Matthew 1:18-25), in his sinless life (Hebrews 4:15), in his miracles (Cana, John 2:1-11; officials son, John 4:46-54; paralyzed man, John 5:1-18; bread for 5000, John 6:1-14; walking on water, John 6:16-21; blind man, John 9:1-12; Lazarus, John 11:38-44, etc.) In his substitutionary, atoning death through his shed blood (Mark 10:45, II Corinthians 5:21, Romans 3:24-25) in his bodily resurrection (John 20) in his ascension to the right hand of the Father (Acts 1:9-11, Romans 8:34), and his second physical coming in power and glory (Thessalonians 4:14, Acts 1:11, Titus 2:13-14, Mark 14:62).
  • The Holy Spirit: We believe that the Holy Spirit ministers the person of Jesus to mankind. He convicts people of guilt in regard to sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:5-16). Man can obtain salvation and eternal life with the Holy Spirit’s work of regeneration (John 3:5-8, Titus 3:4-7). He lives within the believer (I Corinthians 6:19-20). He enables the believer to live the Christian life (Ephesians 5:18, Galatians 5:22-23, Acts 1:8).

Humanity

  • Creation and Fall: We believe God created man, male and female, in His image. God gave man the responsibility to rule over all His earthly creation (Genesis 1:26-31). Through disobedience, man offended God. This sin caused all mankind to be sinners with its resulting death (Genesis 3:1-24, Romans 3:10, 20, Romans 5:12, Romans 6:23).
  • Resurrection: We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life (I Thessalonians 4:13-18), and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (Revelation 20:11-15).

Salvation

The Bible speaks of the need for every person to be “born again” (John 3:3-6); to “believe in Him” (Acts 16:31); “to know God in Christ (John 14:6, 17:3); to “confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’” and “believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9). “God does not want anyone to perish, but rather He desires everyone to come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9).

The Church

The church is the body of Christ Jesus, of which, He is the head (Ephesians 5:23). All who believe Christ’s death for our sins, and His resurrection who have received Jesus as their Savior and Lord; are one in Christ. These believers are the church universal (I Corinthians 15:3-8, I Corinthians 12:13, 27).

The universal church makes itself known through local groups of gathered believers (Philippians 1:1, Ephesians 1:1, I Corinthians 1:22). These gathered believers, local churches, are to draw near to God, to love and do good deeds and witness to others that they may believe. Local churches are to make disciples: baptizing, celebrating the Lord’s Supper by open communion inviting all believers who are present to participate (I Corinthians 11:17-33), and teaching the Lord’s commands (Matthew 28:19-20).

Marriage and the Family

We believe that marriage was ordained by God at creation as the sacred union of one man and one woman (Genesis 1:26-28, Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:1-10). All sexual relations must therefore be reserved for that union (1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Hebrews 13:4). Christian marriage is a representation of Christ’s relationship to His church (Ephesians 5:31–32).

We also believe that children are a blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). Thus all human life is sacred and worthy of protection from the moment of conception (Psalm 139:14-16).
